Do you like making lists? If so, my favourite tip for house cleaning will be right up your alley! I will not waste your time with what detergent to buy and what essential oil is the secret ingredient to housekeeping bliss. Instead, I will point your attention to the simplest of trick to improve your domestic cleaning efficiency.
I remember when I first started my job as a professional home cleaner more than ten years ago – I had the false self-confidence of knowing all too well what I was doing. Thankfully, there was this great instructor who showed me the error of my ways and helped me to become the proficient house cleaner I am today.
I still remember her favourite line – and one she used with a devilish delight: “The stupid people remember – the clever ones make a list.” Then she would take out her tiny pocketbook and check the sanitary tasks at hand. It is the easiest and yet most clever advice I received from her – and I often pass it along to my customers and friends.
No matter how hard you try, you cannot remember everything you need to do at home. You may forget to polish the kitchen sink this week, or that the expiry date of your floor detergent is overdue. You may skip the kitchen cupboards dusting or forget whether you polished the doorknobs around the house.
But do you know what? There is absolutely no point in remembering those things when you can simply write them down. Make a list or a chart of your regular housekeeping chores and stick to it – it will be so much easier to follow your progress and know what you have to do next. If you are really good at lists, you can elaborate and break down the chores per day – Monday for the kitchen, Tuesday for the bedroom, Friday for the bathroom, etc.
Take this approach, and you will feel the difference immediately. I know it works for me – trust me, it will do wonders for your domestic cleaning!
